Stepwell
Agrasen Ki Baoli
Also known as Ugrasen Ki Baoli
A dramatic stepwell hidden among modern Delhi, descending through long symmetrical flights of stone steps into the earth.
About Agrasen Ki Baoli
Agrasen Ki Baoli is a stepwell about 60 metres long, hidden among office blocks off Hailey Road near Connaught Place. A straight flight of more than a hundred steps descends between arcaded walls, three levels deep, to where the water used to be.
Tradition says the legendary King Agrasen built it; its architecture points to the fourteenth century, when the Agrawal community, who trace their descent from him, is said to have rebuilt it. It's a protected monument, free to visit, and one of the most photographed corners of central Delhi.
