About Red Fort

Shah Jahan built the Red Fort as the palace-fortress of his new capital, Shahjahanabad, and moved the court here from Agra in 1648. Its red sandstone walls run for more than 2 km, enclosing marble pavilions, audience halls and gardens once cooled by a channel of running water, the Nahr-i-Bihisht or 'Stream of Paradise'.

The fort is also where modern India marks its independence. Since 1947, the Prime Minister has raised the national flag here every Independence Day and addressed the country from the ramparts above the Lahori Gate.
