About Jama Masjid
Shah Jahan's great congregational mosque was built between 1650 and 1656 on a rise facing the Red Fort, and was the principal mosque of the Mughal capital. Its courtyard can hold around 25,000 worshippers, and three gateways lead up to it by broad flights of steps.
The prayer hall is crowned by three marble domes and flanked by two minarets about 40 metres high. Below the steps, the lanes of Old Delhi are among the oldest and busiest in the city, full of food stalls and wholesale markets.

What should I wear?
- Cover your arms and legs, and take off your shoes at the entrance. Robes are available at the gate for visitors who need them. The mosque closes to visitors during prayers.
Can I climb a minaret?
- Usually, yes, for a small separate fee, though it's sometimes closed. The view takes in the Red Fort and the rooftops of Old Delhi.
