About Qutub Minar
Qutub Minar was begun around 1199 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Sultan of Delhi, and finished by his successor Iltutmish; later rulers repaired it and rebuilt the top. At about 73 metres it is still the tallest brick minaret in the world, its fluted storeys of red and buff sandstone banded with carved inscriptions.
The complex around it is just as interesting: the ruined Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, built partly from the stones of earlier temples, the unfinished stump of the Alai Minar, and the Iron Pillar, a column more than 1,500 years old that has barely rusted.

Can you climb the Qutub Minar?
- No. The staircase inside has been closed to visitors since 1981.
How long should I allow?
- About an hour to walk around the minaret, the mosque ruins and the Iron Pillar. It's in Mehrauli, in the south of the city, so it pairs well with Humayun's Tomb on the same day.
