About Humayun's Tomb

Humayun's Tomb was the first great garden tomb in India. It was built after the emperor's death in 1556 — traditionally at the wish of his widow, Bega Begum — and finished in the early 1570s to a design by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas.

Its tall double dome, its red sandstone inlaid with white marble, and the four-part garden it stands in set the pattern that Shah Jahan's builders would perfect in the Taj Mahal two generations later. A long restoration completed in 2013 brought back its water channels and gardens, and the surrounding complex holds several older tombs, including Isa Khan's.
