About Jaisamand Lake & Palace
Jaisamand Lake, about 50 kilometres south-east of Udaipur, was created by Maharana Jai Singh in the 1680s by damming the Gomati river, and is one of the largest artificial lakes in Asia. Its marble dam is lined with chhatris and carved elephants, and summer palaces built for the queens stand on the hills above.
Islands dot the water, and the hills around it form the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary. It makes a peaceful half-day trip from Udaipur.
