About City Palace
Maharana Udai Singh II began the City Palace in 1559, when he founded Udaipur on the shore of Lake Pichola, and his successors kept adding to it for nearly four hundred years. The result is a chain of palaces joined into a single front more than 240 metres long, rising above the lake in balconies, towers and cupolas.
Inside, rooms such as the Mor Chowk, with its peacocks in coloured glass mosaic, and the Zenana Mahal show how the Mewar court lived. Part of the complex is still used by the royal family, and the Fateh Prakash and Shiv Niwas palaces are now hotels.
