About Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal, the 'Palace of Winds', was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh as an extension of the royal women's quarters of the City Palace. Its five-storey pink sandstone front has 953 small windows, and their latticed screens let the women of the court watch processions and street life without being seen.

The building is surprisingly shallow, in places barely a room deep, and the screens funnel breezes through it, which gave it its name. Its famous front faces the street; you go in from the back, and the upper terraces look out over the old city towards Jantar Mantar and the City Palace.
