About Amber Fort

Amber was the capital of the Kachhwaha Rajputs for centuries before Jaipur was founded. The palace you see was begun by Raja Man Singh I, one of Akbar's leading generals, in the late 16th century and extended by his successors, above all Jai Singh I. It climbs the hillside above Maota Lake in a series of courtyards, each grander than the last.

Look for the Diwan-i-Aam on its double rows of columns, the Ganesh Pol gateway painted with fine frescoes, and the Sheesh Mahal, where walls and ceilings set with thousands of mirror fragments glitter in the light of a single flame. Behind them, the oldest part, Man Singh's palace, wraps around a courtyard of apartments for the royal women.
