About Agra Fort
Agra Fort was the Mughals' seat of power before Delhi. Akbar rebuilt it in red sandstone from 1565, and his grandson Shah Jahan later added white marble palaces inside the walls. The result is a royal city within a fortress: audience halls, mosques, courtyards and private apartments inside walls about 2.5 km round.
Its most poignant corner is the Musamman Burj, an octagonal marble tower looking down the Yamuna to the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan spent his last years confined in the fort by his son Aurangzeb, and tradition says he watched his wife's tomb from here until he died in 1666.

How long do I need at Agra Fort?
- Allow at least an hour and a half with a guide, enough for the main courtyards, the audience halls and the marble pavilions above the river.
Is it worth seeing if I've already seen the Taj Mahal?
- Yes. The two tell one story: the fort is where Shah Jahan ruled from, and where he ended his days looking across at the Taj. It also stays open on Fridays, when the Taj is closed.
