About Mehtab Bagh
Mehtab Bagh, the 'Moonlight Garden', lies directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, laid out on exactly the same axis as the tomb. Floods and silt buried it over the centuries, and the garden you walk through today was restored after excavation.
Legend says Shah Jahan meant to build a black marble tomb for himself here. Archaeologists found no trace of one. What they did find were the foundations of a large octagonal pool that would have reflected the Taj.
Today it's the best place to watch the Taj at sunset, away from the crowds at the tomb itself and with the river in between.

- Yes, straight across the river. You can't walk over to the Taj from here, though: the two are only connected by road.

- In the last hour before sunset, when the Taj turns gold. It's also a good alternative on Fridays, when the Taj itself is closed.
