About Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj)

This tomb was built between 1622 and 1628 by Nur Jahan, wife of the emperor Jahangir, for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg. He had served the court as chief minister under the title Itmad-ud-Daulah, 'Pillar of the State'.

It was the first Mughal tomb faced entirely in white marble rather than red sandstone, and the first to use pietra dura inlay on this scale: geometric patterns, wine vessels, cypress trees and flowers in coloured stone cover almost every surface. It's small, quiet and set in a riverside garden, and many visitors find it more intimate than the Taj Mahal it anticipates.
