Agra exists for one building, but it doesn't end there. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri round out a city built almost entirely around the peak of Mughal architecture.

The classic same-day Delhi–Agra–Delhi run covers the Taj Mahal + Agra Fort in one long day (~10-12 hrs round trip). It's rushed and skips the sunrise Taj view, but it's a genuinely common and workable option if a guest is very short on time.

1 night is the sweet spot — it earns the sunrise Taj Mahal view (the single biggest upgrade over a same-day trip) without over-staying in a city with only 2-3 major sights
A day trip from Delhi is possible but rushed and skips the Taj Mahal sunrise view, which is widely considered the best time to see it (soft light, thinnest crowds). An overnight lets guests do sunrise Taj + Agra Fort + Fatehpur Sikri without racing the clock.
