About Manikarnika Ghat
Manikarnika is the holiest of Varanasi's cremation grounds, where funeral pyres burn day and night. Hindus believe that cremation here frees the soul from the cycle of rebirth, and families bring their dead from across India to be carried down to the river through the lanes of the old city.
The ghat's sacred tank, Manikarnika Kund, is said to have been dug by Vishnu. Visitors may watch quietly from a respectful distance, but photographing the cremations is not allowed; a guide can explain the rituals and keep you clear of touts asking for donations.
