About Patwon Ki Haveli
Patwon ki Haveli is a row of five adjoining mansions built for the sons of Guman Chand Patwa, a rich trader in brocade and jewellery. The first and largest was begun in 1805, and the five took around fifty years to finish.
Their sandstone fronts are carved as finely as lace, with dozens of balconies and latticed windows. Two of the havelis are open as museums, with painted ceilings, mirror work and period furniture that show how Jaisalmer's merchant families lived.

Why are Jaisalmer's havelis so ornate?
- The town grew rich on the caravan trade across the Thar, and its merchants competed to build the most impressive houses. Stone was the one material in plentiful supply, so the money went into carving.
