About Nathmal Ki Haveli
Nathmal Ki Haveli was built in 1885 for Diwan Mohata Nathmal, prime minister of Jaisalmer. Two brothers, the craftsmen Hathi and Lulu, built it, each carving one half of the facade without copying the other, so the two sides look alike at first glance but differ in their details.
A pair of carved sandstone elephants guards the entrance, and the carvings mix traditional motifs with the novelties of the day, including horses, a bicycle and a steam engine. Part of the house is still lived in, and the ground floor is open as a shop.
