About Akal Wood Fossil Park
Akal Wood Fossil Park, about 17 kilometres from Jaisalmer on the Barmer road, preserves the fossilised trunks of trees that grew here around 180 million years ago, in the Jurassic period, when this part of the Thar was a forested coast rather than a desert.
About two dozen petrified logs lie where they fell, some several metres long, under shelters in a fenced reserve. It's a short stop, but a remarkable glimpse of how much the landscape has changed.
