About St. James Church
St James' Church, near Kashmere Gate, is the oldest surviving church in Delhi. It was built between 1826 and 1836 by Colonel James Skinner, founder of the cavalry regiment Skinner's Horse, in fulfilment of a vow he made while lying wounded after a battle.
Its plan is a cross under a central dome, in the neoclassical style, and Skinner is buried beneath the altar. Damaged in the fighting of 1857 and restored afterwards, it's still a working church with Sunday services.
