About Toorji Ka Jhalra
Toorji Ka Jhalra is a stepwell in Jodhpur's old city, built in the 1740s by a queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh. Its symmetrical flights of steps, cut from the local rose-red sandstone and decorated with niches, spouts and carved animals, drop deep to the water.
For decades it was choked with rubbish, until a restoration in the 2010s cleared it. It's now the centre of a lively square of cafés and boutiques a short walk from the Clock Tower, and a favourite place to sit as the light fades.
