Mehrangarh Fort

Rao Jodha founded Mehrangarh in 1459, when he moved the Rathore capital from Mandore to this rocky hill about 125 metres above the plain. Its walls rise as high as 36 metres, and the approach climbs through seven gates, some still marked by cannonballs.

Inside, palaces such as the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal hold one of India's finest museum collections: palanquins, elephant howdahs, arms, miniature paintings and textiles. On the way in, look for the small handprints beside the Loha Pol, left by royal widows who died on their husbands' funeral pyres.
