About Karni Mata Temple, Deshnoke
The Karni Mata temple at Deshnoke, about 30 km south of Bikaner, is dedicated to a 14th- and 15th-century female sage revered as an incarnation of the goddess Durga. It's famous for the thousands of rats, called kabbas, that live in the temple; devotees believe they're reborn members of Karni Mata's clan and feed them milk and grain.
The marble front and silver doors were added by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the early 20th century. Spotting one of the few white rats is thought to be especially lucky.
