Man Mandir Palace & Observatory
Also known as Jantar Mantar Varanasi
A Rajput palace on the riverfront containing an eighteenth-century observatory built to study the heavens from Varanasi.
About Man Mandir Palace & Observatory
Man Mandir is a Rajput palace on the riverfront beside Dashashwamedh Ghat, built around 1600 by Raja Man Singh of Amber, one of Akbar's generals. Its stone balconies and carved windows are among the finest on the ghats.
In the 1730s Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur added an observatory on its roof, one of the five Jantar Mantars he built. The instruments are smaller than those in Jaipur and Delhi, but the view over the river from the roof is superb, and the palace has been restored as a museum.
