About Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve jyotirlingas, the most sacred shrines of Shiva, and the spiritual centre of Varanasi. The present temple was built in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar, queen of Indore, and its spire and dome were later covered in gold given by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab.

For centuries the temple was reached through a maze of narrow lanes. Since the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor opened in 2021, a broad paved walkway links it directly with the ghats on the Ganges. Expect long queues, tight security and a short, crowded moment of darshan.
