About Ramnagar Fort
Ramnagar Fort stands on the east bank of the Ganges, across the river from Varanasi's ghats. Raja Balwant Singh built it in the 1750s from cream-coloured Chunar sandstone, and it's still the home of the family of the former Maharajas of Benares.
Part of the fort is a museum of the family's collections: vintage cars, palanquins, weapons, costumes and an astronomical clock. Each autumn the town around it stages the Ramnagar Ramlila, a month-long performance of the Ramayana that the royal family has supported for generations.
