About India Gate
India Gate is a 42-metre sandstone arch built as a memorial to the soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War; the names of more than 13,000 of them are carved into its stone. Edwin Lutyens designed it, and it was completed in 1931 at the eastern end of the ceremonial avenue now called Kartavya Path.
The Amar Jawan Jyoti flame, lit under the arch in 1972, was merged in 2022 with the flame at the new National War Memorial just behind it. After dark the arch is lit up and the lawns fill with families, ice-cream carts and balloon sellers.
